EXCUSES – As business owners we sometimes need to sit back and take a look at a single work day. During that day how many excuses do we hear from our people that are simply attempts to explain away poor performance? Worse yet, how many excuses do we as business owners make not only to ourselves but to our employees as well? Let’s get one thing straight: as as a business owner there is a pretty good chance that you are the only one with “skin in the game”. When things are going well you get and deserve all of the accolades. When they are not going well the same thing holds true. You and your family are probably the only ones with financial risk in this endeavor.
Excuses run the gamut everywhere from the economy, to the political party that’s in office, to the banks, to the housing bubble that burst, and every other one you can possibly think of in between. The fact is there is little if anything that you can do about them. Unless you are ready to fold your tent and go home, you must find a way to orchestrate the success of your business in spite of all of them.
Step number one: Stop Making Excuses and Stop Accepting Them! Perhaps you might consider putting a sign on the front of your desk, No Excuses Allowed!
